Cape Cod Wedding Photographer

Richard Talmage Photojournalist has documented hundreds of Weddings over the years. Starting out first as a photographer and then switching in to Video and now merging the two together. I have noticed a few shifts throughout the years and what has happened in the industry.

Photography started out with box cameras and I started out with Roll flex Cameras and Graphex strobes. Even prior to that I worked with Studio View cameras with 4/ 5 film backs. For Video Coverage I started out with a Panasonic 456 and have made great strides since then.

Photography has now progressed with the digital world. Today you can see the image you produced and on the spot make a decision as to which one you want to use. Back 30 years ago you had to wait until our film was off to a lab and then you had to pray the images turned ok when you heard back from the lab. I will never forget one wedding where I shot twice the images during the reception because I noticed the button that caused the Single Reflex camera had a switch between the flash settings and the single light bulb from the 60's was moved between the proper section and the bad section. I died during the reception once I noticed the setting in the single bulb section ( it could have happened when changing the film) and I was not sure so I started to go around the reception room and re taking some of the candid shots over again. I remember some of the guests commenting (He must be good with all the copies of the photos he was taking) but I was not happy at all. I then called the lab on Monday and told them the story. The called on Wednesday once they had the film processed and told me everything was OK. And you have said that you wanted to become a photographer?

The beginning of Digital was a bit of fun also with the cameras showing camera shift exposure and balancing the lights. Today that is a thing of the past if knows how to expose or use a better camera. Still today you can still have a problem but there are corrective software features for the images to be brought back into use or discarded.

Videography has also changed re the digital world. Today we are filming with HD cameras but started out with the Panasonic 456. That camera had an aversion to red. If there was a red carpet or a red flag on an altar the camera was a gem to fix. That is where I learned the great comment that I a shot was off color then turn it to black and white. Once video turned into digital the newer cameras started to change each year. I have been through six camera systems since I started in the Video world back in 1994. There has been so much change over the last 15 years that would make your head spin. Today video coverage is very good with professional cameras and professional audio. There is still a lot of bad video coverage out there and the best way to improve your skills is to join a local video association, a state organization or a national organization to see what others are doing that you can bring back to your studio. If you keep it up long enough you will be the one where people are coming to you for advice.

The biggest problem with staring out is you need coverage in order to get a sample. Once you get a sample you will need to start another one and get your message out. It can happen but will take time and perseverance to break into either Photography or Videography today. If you think you have what it takes talk to a professional first and then get started.
